SELANGOR MCA vice-chairman Datuk Liew Yuen Keong said the move to raise councillors’ allowances in Selangor by 30% is unjustified and a waste of taxpayers’ money.
Liew said the increase in allowances must reflect the quality of service.
“I don’t see the council services any better than the former administration under the Barisan Nasional,” said Liew, who also the Serdang BN chairman.
The former Subang Jaya councillor said most of the councils in Selangor had not overcome the cleanliness problem.
“Towns are dirty, drains are clogged and rubbish are strewn everywhere and yet they demand for higher allowances,” he said on Saturday.
Liew, who is also the party’s central working committee member, said as a councillor for more than 13 years under the previous administration he managed with a RM500 monthly allowance and on most occasions he took out his own money to serve the people.
Councillors in Selangor have had their allowances doubled since 2008 when the Pakatan government took control of the state.
The latest from RM750 to RM1,000 was made recently.Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman, who announced the raise, said it would take effect from Feb 1.“Based on the state’s circular issued on March 11 under the Local Government Act the 34% increase is for municipal and city councillors.
“District councillors will also enjoy a raise. Their allowances have been raised to RM750 from RM250.In addition, the councillors will also get RM150 each for attending sub-committee meetings while the district councillors would be given RM100 each.On an average a councillor attends six meetings.
Senator Chew Lee Giok, a former four-term Subang Jaya municipal councillor, noted that a two-fold increase in fixed allowances along with other increases in three years was unjustified. The state executive council has said the increased allowances would only cost the local councils between RM60,000 and RM75,000 each in additional annual expenditure.
MCA Women’s Wing secretary-general said the present councilors had not brought about any marked improvement to the people they served. However, former Ampang Jaya councilor Husain Bahaudin said the increases were justified because councillors today had more work to do than previously.“With an increase in population and development a councillor’s duties, too, have increased,” he said.
